Demand justice for murdered environmental activists

Petition for an independent investigation into Berta Càceres's murder.

Demand Justice for Murdered Environmental Activist Berta Càceres

Aleksandr,

This month, the world lost a powerful voice for environmental protection and the rights of indigenous people to the guns of masked murderers in Honduras. Will you join Care2 human rights advocate Michael T. and demand justice?

Urge the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights to launch an independent investigation into the murder of Berta Càceres and other activists in Honduras.

In the early hours of March 3, Berta Càceres — a prominent indigenous leader and environmental activist — was brutally gunned down in her home by unknown assailants.

Berta's family and friends suspect she was targeted because of her opposition to powerful development interests whose projects have threatened the environment and the indigenous Lenca people. And, so far, the country's government has done little to find Berta's killers.

The corrupt government of Honduras cannot be trusted to solve Berta's murder — or address ongoing violence against activists in Honduras. Berta's family — and the world — deserves an independent and comprehensive investigation by the United Nations.

Berta is not the first — or even most recent — activist to be killed in Honduras.

Just days after Berta was killed, her colleague Nelson Garcìa was gunned down. Nelson was a member of Berta's organization the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), and he was shot to death in broad daylight by unidentified gunmen in northwestern Honduras.

Between 2010 and 2014, 101 campaigners have been killed in Honduras, a higher death toll relative to population than anywhere else.

Murderers and cowards like Berta's killers thrive in the darkness. We must turn the global spotlight on violence against Honduran activists and demand justice.

Speak out for Berta, Nelson and all the champions for the environment and human rights in Honduras. Please sign Michael's petition to the United Nations now.

In solidarity,
